Help for Maternal Depression

Writer: Cheryl BrannanCheryl Brannan

Between 15 and 20 percent of all women experience some form of pregnancy-related depression or anxiety. It could include prenatal depression, the "baby blues," postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. But the good news is, maternal depression is treatable. You are not alone.

Pregnancy-related depression and anxiety can be significant challenges that many expectant mothers face. It's important to recognize that these feelings are not uncommon and can stem from a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, physical discomfort, stress from impending parenting responsibilities, and changes in relationships. Understanding the importance of mental health during pregnancy is crucial for both the mother and the developing baby. Addressing these issues can lead to a healthier pregnancy, better prenatal care, and a more positive bonding experience with the baby after birth. If you or someone you know is struggling with pregnancy-related depression or anxiety, there are many resources available. Counseling, support groups, and mindfulness practices can offer support and tools to manage these feelings. It’s about creating a safe space where mothers can express their feelings and find ways to cope. Investing in mental wellbeing during pregnancy not only enhances the mother’s experience but also positively impacts the baby’s development. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, and prioritizing mental health is key to a healthy pregnancy.
